The process of making indigo dye is truly mystical where green leaves are turned into brilliant blue dye through fermentation. Unlike other dyes made from bark, berries or leaves, making of blue dye is a difficult process. The farming and dying is a skill passed down through generations which uses myriad dying traditions as well several species of leaves to make that perfect indigo color. The freshly ploughed plants are fermented in a tank full of water, where they release indoxyl after about 14 hours into water which is then stirred with paddles to mix it with air. After being exposed to air, the indoxyl in the water converts into indigotin which settles down at the bottom of the tank. This settled mixture is then heated to remove impurities and then dried to form a thick paste, which makes the indigo dye.Traditionally, India used to trade this plant-based indigo dyed fabric also known as ‘Blue Gold’ to Europe who craved for this rich color.
